Press Release on June 3, 2000

The Public Opinion Programme (POP) was established in June 1991 at the Social Sciences Research Centre in the University of Hong Kong to collect and study public opinion on topics which could be of interest and value to academics, policy-makers, the media, and the general public. In order to strengthen our position as an independent provider of opinion data, as well as to take on an educational role on matters relating to opinion research, POP was transferred to the Journalism and Media Studies Centre (JMSC) in the University of Hong Kong effective from May 2000. JMSC is a teaching and research unit in the University of Hong Kong dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in journalism.

To mark the Ninth Anniversary of POP, an experimental website at http://hkupop.hku.hk is set up today to disseminate research findings directly to the public. Such information should be useful to academics, journalists, community leaders, policy-makers and the general public alike. Serious readers who do not want to rely on media reports alone may find our website particularly helpful. The website may be conveniently called "HKU POP Site"

The HKU POP Site today releases its latest survey on Hong Kong people's opinion on the June Fourth Incident. This is fact the eighth consecutive annual poll conducted by the POP Team since 1993 shortly before June Fourth. Issues covered include people's support of students' movement, their appraisal of human right conditions in China, their rating of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of the Patriotic Democratic Movement in China, and their urge to promote economic and democratic movement in China.

Our HKU POP Site is fast evolving. It will soon include methodological notes and much more research data for public consumption. Feedback most welcomed.
