HKU POP SITE releases surveys on the Fourth Anniversary of HKSAR

Press Release on June 29, 2001

The Public Opinion Programme (POP) at The University of Hong Kong today releases the result of its Fourth HKSAR Anniversary Survey via its website called the "HKU POP SITE" (http://hkupop.hku.hk). Since 1997, the POP Team has conducted annual surveys when approaching July 1 each year, to gauge people's changing opinion about the handover. Topics covered in these surveys include people's ethnic identity, their evaluation of changes in the society, and their feelings about the change of sovereignty. Our latest finding shows that public opinion in these aspects has remained rather stable in the year past. Relevant figures and methodological notes are available at the HKU POP Site. The same website also carries the latest figures of Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa's popularity ratings, and people's satisfaction with the performance of the SAR Government. Our team members are happy to answer any question regarding the research design of these surveys, but would not comment on their results. After the fourth anniversary, starting from July, the POP Team will put up a large amount of tracking poll data on-line for public consumption and monitoring. Such arrangements will be announced in due course.
